Reducing the Deficit

AGENDA: Deficit Commission

America now owes over $14 trillion to our creditors. This is simply unsustainable.

 

Last year I served on President Obama’s Fiscal Commission, which was charged with creating a long term plan to reduce our debt. When the final recommendations were put to a vote, I voted Yes.

 

It was not an easy decision, and I knew then that my vote will be widely criticized by some, but I believed then that it was the right thing to do. I still do.

Debt Ceiling Negotiations

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - After several days of intense negotiations at the White House between President Obama and Congressional Leadership of both parties, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) spoke to the press with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and members of Senate Democratic Leadership about the consequences of failing to extend the debt ceiling. Prior to Durbin's remarks, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said that the country is running out of time to extend the debt ceiling.

Getting America Back to Work

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) said today that the only realistic way to get America back to work and fix our deficit problems is for both political parties to work together. Durbin, a member of the President?s bipartisan fiscal commission, has been working with Senators from both parties to develop a responsible plan for reducing our debts in the future while promoting desperately needed job creation now.
