AGENDA: Deficit Commission

America now owes over $14 trillion to our creditors. This is simply unsustainable.


Last year I served on President Obama’s Fiscal Commission, which was charged with creating a long term plan to reduce our debt. When the final recommendations were put to a vote, I voted Yes.


It was not an easy decision, and I knew then that my vote will be widely criticized by some, but I believed then that it was the right thing to do. I still do.

Preventing Debt Default

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - Just before the United States Senate passed the bipartisan debt ceiling extension by a vote of 74-26, U.S Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) spoke on the floor of the United States Senate about why he planned to vote for the compromise even though he disagreed with several portions of the legislation. In the speech, Durbin said that the consequences of defaulting on the nation?s debt would be dire and could affect Social Security beneficiaries, the Central Intelligence Agency, and even the men and women risking their lives in the Armed Forces. Immediately following the vote, Durbin spoke about the next steps we must take to begin creating good-paying jobs right here at home.

Debt Ceiling Compromise

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) spoke on the floor of the United States Senate in support of the bipartisan compromise to extend the debt ceiling and avert an economic disaster. In the speech, Durbin emphasized the importance of coming together and putting the economic wellbeing of the country ahead of politics and partisanship in a recorded statement.
