ISSUES: EnvironmentResponsible stewardship of the earth and its assets is something we owe to our children as well as to ourselves. I have long advocated on behalf of measures that protect America's precious natural resources. Whether leading the fight to preserve our Great Lakes, championing the manufacturing and broad use of ethanol and renewable sources of energy, or cleaning up toxic waste sites, I am committed to a clean, healthy, and vibrant environment.

Progress

Leading the fight to pressure British Petroleum not to dump additional ammonia and sludge into Lake Michigan, as part of a long-term effort to champion the preservation and restoration of the Great Lakes.

 

Worked in a successful multi-state effort to prevent oil drilling in the Great Lakes.

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released a video statement today following an announcement by the U.S. Department of Energy that a new cooperative agreement with the FutureGen Industrial Alliance has been finalized, allowing Phase II of project development on begin on FutureGen 2.0.

Mississippi River Meeting
December 17, 2012

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) convened a meeting between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard, and industry and local stakeholders, including U.S. Reps. Jerry Costello and John Shimkus and Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, to discuss the Corps' response to the Mississippi River's low water level in East Alton on Monday, December 17. Following the meeting, Senator Durbin discussed the Corps' plans to maintain navigation on the river despite near-record low water levels.
