ISSUES: Health CareThe health and wellness of the American people reflects the health of our nation -- physically but also financially. The rapidly rising cost of healthcare has made it difficult for families and businesses to keep up. And it's getting in the way of our ability to compete as a nation in an increasingly global economy. The health reform law passed last year will help to contain the growth of health care costs and provide 30 million more Americans with insurance coverage. This law is a major step in the right direction, and I am committed to continue improving the health of our country now, and in the years to come.

Authored the original language that passed in the U.S. House of Representatives to ban smoking on short-distance airline flights and worked with Senator Frank Lautenberg to enact the ban and extend it to all flights. Successfully extended the ban to international flights.

Durbin, a member of the President?s bipartisan fiscal commission, has been working with Senators from both parties to develop a responsible plan for reducing our debts in the future while promoting desperately needed job creation now.
