DURBIN ANNOUNCES A MORE THAN $78,000 INVESTMENT IN ILLINOIS COMMUNITY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT SAFETY

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has awarded a total of $78,399 in Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants to the communities in Illinois to support local law enforcement efforts. This funding will be used to purchase updated equipment, help retain personnel, and support prosecution and court programs.

“Today’s funding is an investment in the safety and security of Illinois communities. Ensuring that our nation’s law enforcement officers are equipped with the tools they need to fulfill their duties is an investment in both their safety and in the safety of the communities they serve,” Durbin said.

Under this announcement, the following Illinois communities will receive funding:

  • Decatur, Illinois will receive $37,653 in funding; and

  • Rock Island, Illinois will receive $40,746 in funding.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, named in honor of a young police officer who was killed while on duty, is administered by the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). The grants are awarded to states and units of local government to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime and to improve the justice system.
