Chicago - Federal money could become available Aug. 10 for local flood victims.

Senator Dick Durbin visited west suburban Elmhurst Monday.

The mayors of several suburban towns gathered to hear more about the federal response to last month's severe flooding.

"The honest answer is for some of these people, we will not be able to make them whole. We can't fill up this hole in their life. We try to help where we can, and I’ll do my best to make sure every dollar we're eligible for comes back to our state," Durbin said.

Gov. Pat Quinn has declared 12 counties, including Cook and DuPage, state disaster areas.

Local towns are now assessing the damage as part of their request for federal aid.
