U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (IL-D) announced he has nominated more than 30 young men and women to attend the nation's four service academies.

All applicants must secure a nomination from one of a few sources, including a U.S. Senator, and demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and good moral character.

The northwest suburban nominees are: Ryan P. Huges, of Deer Park, who's applying to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.; and Brian C. Colby, of Palatine, who's applying to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The other two service academies are the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.

Only four of the 31 applicants are guaranteed admission.
