A Belleville attorney and member of the Southern Illinois University board of trustees has been unanimously confirmed by the Senate to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.

Stephen Wigginton, a partner at the law firm of Weilmuenster and Wigginton in Belleville, has been a part-time felony prosecutor in the Madison County state's attorney's office since 1999. He has been on the SIU board of trustees since 2005. Now, he'll assume the post occupied by A. Courtney Cox, who was appointed in November 2007 by President George W. Bush.

When reached for comment Thursday night, Cox said he and Wigginton have become well acquainted over the past few months.

"We've talked about the district and the issues. He is committed to doing a good job and I think he will," Cox said. "I've really en-joyed serving the district, and I'm confident our new U.S. Attorney will do a great job for all of the citizens of the district."

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Springfield, who announced Wigginton's appointment late Thursday, said the attorney was one of two individuals he recommended for the job.

"Throughout his years as a lawyer in Southern Illinois, Stephen Wigginton has shown integrity and independence that I am sure he will bring to the position of U.S. Attorney," Durbin said. "It was an honor recommending his name to President Obama and voting on his nomination today (Thursday)."

The Southern District office covers the lower 38 counties of Illinois.
