Durbin Meets With Advocates From The Alliance For Criminal Justice Reform

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, met virtually with advocates from the Alliance for Criminal Justice Reform (ACJR) to discuss police reform.  In their meeting, the group talked about the need to meet the moment with real change to bring about justice and accountability that Americans across the nation are calling for.

“In 2018, Congress came together on a bipartisan basis to tackle one of the toughest political issues of our day—criminal justice reform—and pass the landmark First Step Act,” Durbin said.  “I believe we can do it again.  We know that there are systemic problems in our policing system that we need to address.  The status quo is unacceptable when it comes to matters of race and policing in America.”

ACJR is a coalition of citizen-activists, including recording artists, professional athletes, coaches, actors, and other well-known individuals.  Today’s attendees included Doc Rivers, Head Coach, Philadelphia 76ers; David Fizdale, NBA analyst; Don Was, musician and president of Blue Note Records; Elizabeth Williams, WNBA, Atlanta Dream; Maxwell (Gerald Maxwell Rivera), recording artist; Doug Glanville, MLB analyst.
