Durbin Meets With Illinois Farm Bureau

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, today met with Brian Duncan, President of the Illinois Farm Bureau, to discuss federal agriculture policy.  Also joining the meeting was Board Member Mark Tuttle of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau and Stephen Riskedal, Young Leaders State Committee Chair.  During their meeting, the group discussed uncertainty in the farm economy and the importance of stability in federal policy, such as upholding efforts towards a five-year Farm Bill and regional fairness in federal assistance.  Other topics included USDA proposed cuts to research dollars, cuts in farm conservation programs, restoring funds for locally-grown foods for schools, and improved farmer input into the “Make America Healthy Again” report released by the Department of Health and Human Services.

“I appreciate having an opportunity to discuss these policy issues in greater detail with the Illinois Farm Bureau,” said Durbin. “As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I will continue to work towards policies that keep Illinois agriculture strong.”
