Durbin Releases Statement Following Failed Iran War Powers Resolution Vote

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement after Senate Republicans voted against Senator Tammy Duckworth’s (D-IL) war powers resolution that would have removed United States Armed Forces from hostilities in Iran that have not been authorized by Congress.

Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution states that the power to declare war is an explicit power of Congress and Congress overwhelmingly reaffirmed this constitutional provision when it passed the War Powers Act in 1973 over the veto of President Nixon. Yesterday, Durbin spoke on the Senate floor and denounced the President’s shifting rationales for entering the war on Iran. Durbin was one of 23 Senators who voted against the war in Iraq.

“We desperately need a coherent plan to end this war—one that addresses the remaining highly enriched uranium still in Iran, stabilizes the U.S. and global economy, and makes sure any further war is only done so with the consent of Congress.

“I wish my colleagues on the other side of the aisle would help get us out of this mess. Instead, they are enabling this erratic President.”
