Durbin Statement on the Passing of U.S. Senator Charles Percy

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement today on the passing of former U.S. Senator Charles Percy (R-IL):

“Chuck Percy was a political opponent in the Douglas and Simon campaigns but always a friend. That statement reflects a better moment in American politics and a man who was always viewed as honorable and honest in his representation of our state.

“As a college student I was with Sen. Douglas in East St. Louis when he learned of the tragic death of his opponent Chuck Percy's daughter, Valerie. Douglas suspended his campaign and fended off all questions until Percy resumed the campaign. In the closing days of that contest both men showed a humanity and a respect which should be recalled in this era of venomous personal attacks and wild charges.

“Loretta and I extend our sympathy to the Percy family and especially my colleague Jay Rockefeller and his wife Sharon.”
