Durbin Encourages Navistar to Open New Facility in Illinois

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today encouraged the Chairman and CEO of Navistar International Corporation, Daniel Ustian, to locate the company’s new facility in Illinois.  Because the company’s plans to open a new facility in Lisle, Illinois have recently been called into question, Durbin also requested a meeting with Ustain to discuss the ongoing partnership between Navistar and Illinois.

“I am requesting a meeting to see if there are ways that I or my office can be of assistance as you continue to consider locations, including Lisle, in Illinois to locate this new facility, write Durbin.  “Our state and your company have fought wars, weathered economic hardships, and shared great successes in our partnership lasting over 150 years…It is with this long tradition and history in mind that I encourage you to look for ways to continue and grow our partnership in Illinois.”

On May 26, Navistar announced that it had dropped plans to locate their new headquarters in Lisle, Illinois a move that would create as many as 7,000 jobs.  Since then, several state and local officials and have engaged in an effort to keep Navistar in Illinois recommending not only a second look at Lisle, but also considering additional sites such as Rockford, McHenry County and other towns in Illinois.

Dear Chairman Ustian:

I am writing to encourage you to keep and grow Navistar in Illinois.

It has recently come to my attention that plans for opening a new facility near Lisle have come into question. I am requesting a meeting to see if there are ways that I or my office can be of assistance as you continue to consider locations, including Lisle, in Illinois to locate this new facility.

As you well know, Navistar has had a long history with Illinois. Our state and your company have fought wars, weathered economic hardships, and shared great successes in our partnership lasting over 150 years.  On each visit to Illinois I see school buses, commercial trucks, and other vehicles powered by Navistar engines and built by Illinois residents. It is with this long tradition and history in mind that I encourage you to look for ways to continue and grow our partnership in Illinois.

Thank you for your time and attention this matter.

Sincerely,

Richard J. Durbin
United States Senator
