Durbin Announces Nearly $20 Million in HUD Funding for Chicagoland Housing and Community Development

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that communities and housing agencies in the Chicagoland area will receive a total of $19,906,321 in grant funding through three programs administered by Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help develop urban communities in the area. Under today’s announcement, Cook County will receive $14,532,234 in funding.

 

“This funding will give local development agencies in the Chicagoland area the ability to expand and improve existing affordable housing in their communities,” Durbin said. “These federal programs provide invaluable assistance to those who need it the most.”

 

Community Development Block Grants

 

The Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) program provides annual grants to states and local governments to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment and by expanding economic opportunities principally for low and moderate income persons. CDBG funding is an important tool for helping local governments to tackle serious challenges facing their communities. The following Chicagoland communities will receive CDBG funding:

 

  • Cook County, Illinois will receive $9,879,916 in funding;
  • Will County, Illinois: will receive $ 1,922,953 in funding;
  • City of Berwyn, Illinois will receive $1,172,275 in funding;
  • The Town of Cicero, Illinois will receive $1,515,196 in funding and;
  • Village of Hoffman Estates, Illinois: will receive $273,435 in funding.

 

HOME Program

 

The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to state and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities. HOME is the largest Federal block grant to state and local governments designed exclusively to create affordable housing for low-income households. The following Chicagoland communities will receive HOME program funding:

 

  • Cook County, Illinois will receive $4,010,700 in funding and;
  • Will County, Illinois will receive $381,466 in funding.

 

Emergency Shelter Grants

 

The Emergency Shelter Grants program provides annual grants to state, local and private entities to improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters. Emergency Shelter Grants are available for the rehabilitation or remodeling of a building used as a new shelter, operations and maintenance of the facility, essential supportive services and homeless prevention. The following Chicagoland community will receive Emergency Shelter Grant funding:

 

  • Cook County, Illinois will receive $641,618 in funding and;
  • Will County, Illinois will receive $$108,762 in funding.
